St. Jude Families

"Webster’s Dictionary defines cancer as a serious disease caused by cells that are not normal and that can spread to one or many parts of the body. Webster’s hit the nail on the head describing cancer as a “serious disease” however, failed to include in the definition how devastating the effects are. On August 19, 2014, our oldest son was referred to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, where he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL). Our lives changed immediately! We were whisked into a world unknown, a world of fear, not knowing, and emotional rollercoasters. As my family and I embarked on this new journey God was truly working behind the scenes, strategically placing people along our path. We’ve had the pleasure of meeting some really dynamic people, from my son’s medical team to the ladies of Sky High for St. Jude. We had the opportunity to meet Jessy Deardurff and Brittany Hebert, both from Sky High for St. Jude in September of 2015. By November 2015, we had become family. The passion that these ladies expressed for St. Jude went far beyond my imagination. My family and I had an opportunity to see these ladies in action, we attended their San Antonio Clay Shoot Weekend and these ladies were driven to help. They understand how detrimental it is to raise funds for St. Jude to save not just my son but the many kids that walk through the doors and hallways of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Not only are they concerned with St. Jude, but they’ve always illustrated a genuine concern about my family. They go over and beyond to bring a smile or alleviate the many thoughts about treatment. From sending kids to check out a NBA game to dressing as super heroes at their annual Ronald McDonald House Memphis Carnival, this group of strategically placed people have been a true Godsend. In the midst of our journey, from the sick days to the frustrated days, to the days of utter sadness from losing a fellow patient, since we've met they’ve endured every step with us. Living and leading a life of “Walking by Faith and Not by Sight” is more than a notion, but when you can travel that journey with others you’re able to have some perspective. If I could thank everyone who contributes to my son’s recovery, I wouldn’t have enough thank yous to go around. There are so many people we may never meet that contribute to the wonderful cause of Sky high for St. Jude, and we will forever be grateful for their efforts!"

- Tangela London, Mother of St. Jude Patient, Nick

"Sky High has been a cornerstone in providing hope, care, and comfort for the families of Ronald McDonald House of Memphis. Through Sporting Clays events, pop tab collections, and sharing our mission with the Texas and Louisiana community, Sky High has made invaluable contributions to our mission. Since their first contribution in 2007, Sky High has donated more than $1,420,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities of Memphis. Their contributions have funded new TV’s and appliances; security services; kitchen and dining room renovations; bedroom refurbishments; as well as supportive services for the families, such as field trips and outings. Each and every Sky High event is nothing short of amazing to be a part of. The passion that Sky High’s team, volunteers, and participants have for the families of Ronald McDonald House of Memphis and St. Jude is both inspiring and contagious. Through their events Sky High brings their community together to be a partner in supporting families and saving lives. They do just that and are always looking at how they can do more. Not only does the Sky High team dedicate and volunteer their time to fundraise and support Ronald McDonald House of Memphis families, but they bring that passion and excitement to Ronald McDonald House of Memphis every year with the carnival they hold for the families. During the Sky High carnival, the children take a break from being “patients” and enjoy being kids. It is in the smiles of these children that you can see how much of an impact Sky High has on our families. From raising awareness and funds through events, to priceless memories made at the annual Sky High carnival, Sky High’s team, sponsors and volunteers make a positive impact in so many lives. The Ronald McDonald House of Memphis is so honored and grateful to have the support of Sky High in providing a free “home-away-from-home”. Thank you for keeping families close!"

“The Sky High team has shown tremendous dedication to the mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. We are grateful for their incredible commitment, partnership, love and deep passion for helping us in finding cures for children fighting cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Their generosity helps ensure families never receive a bill from St. Jude for treatment, travel, housing or food – because all a family should worry about is helping their child live.”

"One of Anadarko’s core values is servant leadership, and you can really see that in the actions of our employees who volunteer their time and participate in events that support the Sky High for St. Jude organization. Since 2009, we’ve cherished the opportunity to play a modest role in Sky High’s success and mission to fund cancer research that saves children’s lives.

- Bob Buck, Sky High Board Member & Anadarko Employee

"As a competitive shooter, volunteering for Sky High has given me the opportunity to do what I love while loving others who love what I do. My Love for the sport and heart for service had me seeking a place in which I could use my passion to impact lives and Sky High has given me all the above. I couldn’t ask for a more welcoming and caring organization to be a part of and I am more than thrilled to be continually contributing to such an amazing organization." - Cara Maxwell, Volunteer

"I volunteer for Sky High because of my belief in our kids. I believe it is our responsibility to give them the love and support necessary so that they can one day have the chance to take our places. There is no better way of doing that than working with the diverse Sky High community that comes together as one to support St Jude’s Hospital, who is the master at giving kids a chance." - Curtis Stewart, Volunteer

"I volunteer for Sky High for St. Jude because Sky High dedicates their time and efforts to raise money for one of the best causes any charity represents: Our Children! For many years, I have witnessed their tireless efforts to raise money through three charity sporting clays tournaments (per year) to benefit the children and families at St. Jude. The Board Members of Sky High, the organization and volunteers required for the sporting clays tournaments are incredible. Finally, the amount of money that is raised and donated to St. Jude by Sky High is unmatched in any other charity I have ever been involved with. This is one of the best charities to be involved as a volunteer because the results are so rewarding." - Marc Tausend, Volunteer

"I love to volunteer my time to Sky High it is an amazing organization when you see it firsthand you feel proud to be part of it. To be able to help God’s children and the family in their time of needs feels amazing as a group to save lives." - Melissa Zielonka, Volunteer

"After receiving life changing news that our son, Wes, had leukemia in Sept 2013, we tried our best to make his life as normal as possible during his treatment. Many days being sick, exhausted and in pain, made it difficult to be comfortable, much less 'normal'. In October, while at the RMH-Memphis, Sky High for St. Jude hosted a carnival that we attended. There, we met Brittany Hebert, who saw Wes wearing camo, and inquired if he was a hunter.... and by December, we were headed to South Texas for a guided deer hunt, where Wes bagged an 11 point! In April, we went to Kansas on a turkey hunt where he also got 2 birds, a huge tom and a jake! Since then, we've attended 2 fundraising events in Lafayette, the first of which, 2 generous people bought a registered black lab puppy at the auction and gave him to Wes! What a great time we had! The teams of volunteers at these events are amazing! Everyone works so hard to make sure we are having a good time! Thank you, Brittany and Sky High for giving my son something to look forward to in the middle of the most difficult time of his life!" - Sonya Rollo, Mother of St. Jude Patient Wes
